Common Titles and Abbreviations for German Shepherds

While researching and looking into a German Shepherd pedigree, you will see that titles and abbreviations are often used. When it comes to understanding the pedigree of the dog and their parent’s pedigree, it’s important to know what these titles and abbreviations stand for. There are countless ones out there. However, there are a few that show up more often than others. Below you can find a list of some of the more common titles and abbreviations that will be connected to your German Shepherd and their parents.

AD (Ausdauerpruefung) Endurance Test
BH (Begleithund) Companion Dog, Obedience and Temperament Examination
FH1 (Fahrten hund) Tracking Title at 1200 paces
FH2 (Fahrten hund) Tracking Title at 1800 paces
IGP (International Prüfung) 3 Levels (IGP1, IGP2, IGP3) comparable to Sch/ZVV Titles using International Rules
SchH (Schutzhund) Includes 3 Levels SchH1, SchH2, SchH3) Obedience, Protection, and Tracking.
ZVV (Czech Republic) ZVV1, 2 3 comparable to SchH and IGP
Show Ratings
VA (Vorzuglich Aulese) Stands for an Excellent Select Show or Performance Rating, Awarded at Seiger Show. Limited number given per show. Example: VA1, VA2, VA3, Etc.
V (Vorzuglich) Excellent Show
SG (Sehr Gut) Very Good Show
G (Gut) Good Show
A (Ausreichend) Sufficient Show
M (Mangelhaft) Faulty Show
U (Ungenügend) Insufficient
Körung SV Breed survey. The purpose of breed survey is to select from the breeding registry a number of dogs that in their character, performance, and anatomical construction appear suitable for the conservation and improvement of the breed.
KKL Körklasse – Breed Survey class (Kkl1 or Kkl2) In order to be breed-surveyed a dog must have a SchH, HGH or IPO title, must also have approved hips, pass an AD, and have a show-rating of G or better.
